2020–21: Future Vision and the Reimagining of Accreditation
During 2020–21, a period defined by disruption, uncertainty, and rapid change, CIDA launched the Future Vision project to explore what accreditation and design education would need to become in a changing world. As the pandemic reshaped higher education and intensified conversations around equity, inclusion, well-being, and social impact, CIDA brought together educators, practitioners, thought leaders, and stakeholders to reflect on the future of the profession and the role of accreditation within it.
The Future Vision project created space for listening, collaboration, and critical dialogue. Through conversations, environmental scanning, and collective reflection, participants examined how interior design education could better respond to emerging societal needs, evolving professional expectations, and new approaches to learning and engagement.
Rather than simply reacting to a moment of crisis, CIDA used this period as an opportunity to think deeply about long-term transformation. The project emphasized values-driven leadership, inclusivity, adaptability, and the importance of preparing students for increasingly complex human and environmental challenges.
2020–21 became a pivotal moment in shaping the future of accreditation—one grounded in collaboration, equity, innovation, and impact. In a time of global disruption, CIDA and its partners worked together to help create a blueprint for the next era of design education.
