What is the highest and best purpose of interior design?
The highest and best purpose of interior design is to positively impact the lives of people. Perhaps more than any other discipline, interior designers respond to and shape human behavior and experience in a direct way, and at every level from the micro level of the smallest detail, to the macro level of an entire spatial experience. Our practice reaches everyone from the individual person to a group and community, and ultimately to society at large. By impacting the individual one at a time, we play an important part in building and creating community, and ultimately driving social impact. We listen, we research, we analyze and we assess the physical environment, then problem-solve, innovate and create optimal spatial experiences. We are responsible for creating environments that promote health, wellness, safety, equity and inclusivity, while making people productive, empowered and happy. As interior designers, our mission and responsibility is to create spaces that positively impact people, in every aspect of their lives.
